Moving a mobile home: common questions
How much does it cost to move a mobile home in Lake Charles?
It depends on the home and the move, and only a licensed transporter can give you a real quote. As a general guide, national pricing guides put most mobile home moves somewhere between about $4,000 and $30,000+, and one guide lists about $7,000 to $13,000 for moves under 50 miles. These are typical estimates, not quotes.
What usually moves the price:
- Single-wide vs. double-wide (a double-wide travels as two sections)
- Distance and route
- Permits, and escort vehicles for wider loads
- Teardown and setup: skirting, utilities disconnect, blocking, leveling, tie-downs
- Condition of the frame, axles and tires
- How easy it is to get a truck in and out at both sites
Do I need a permit to move a mobile home in Louisiana?
Usually, yes. A mobile home on the highway is an oversize load. Louisiana DOTD issues oversize permits, and its rules describe a single-trip permit (good for up to 72 hours) for individual mobile homes that are oversize but not overweight. Your transporter normally handles the road permit.
Your parish may also have its own requirements before a home moves in or out, such as a move or placement permit, an inspection, or proof that taxes are paid. Check with the parish permit office (for example, Calcasieu Parish) before moving day.
Does the transporter need a license in Louisiana?
Yes. Louisiana requires manufactured home transporters to be licensed through the Louisiana Manufactured Housing Commission, and installers and transporters must carry a $25,000 surety bond. Before you sign anything, ask for the transporter's license number. You can confirm it with the Louisiana Manufactured Housing Commission at (225) 362-5500.
Do I need escort vehicles?
It depends on the size of the home and the route. Wide and long loads can require escort (pilot) vehicles. For example, Louisiana DOTD lists a certified escort as required for loads over 12 feet wide or 90 feet long under some permit types. The transporter and the permit decide this, so ask what your quote includes.
How long does it take to get my home moved?
The drive itself is often a single day for a local move. The wait is usually the scheduling: some movers book out several weeks, and permits and site prep take time too. If you have a deadline, such as a lot lease ending or a land closing, tell us when you request a quote so the right transporter can confirm whether they can make it.
What's different about moving a double-wide?
A double-wide is built in two sections. They are separated, each one is hauled on its own, and the two are rejoined, sealed and leveled at the new site. That means more labor, often two trucks or two trips, and usually a higher price than a single-wide moving the same distance.
Are you a moving company?
No. We are an independent referral service. We don't own trucks or move homes ourselves. We pass your request to licensed, bonded mobile home transporters who serve Southwest Louisiana, and they contact you with their own quote. Requesting a quote is free for you, and we may be paid by the transporters we refer you to.
